best database backup procedure ?

what is the best way to backup large database's ?
size from 200 meg to 800 meg
is the Cpanel backup sufficient ?
i read elsewhere (Cpanel forums) most users are using PuTTY or mysqldumper for more secure backups ?
on vBulletin.org forum there is a mod for an auto daily cron using a backup script ?
